Television Montana

tvmtUniting People & Government through the Power of Television

Television Montana (TVMT) is a public affairs television service established by the Montana legislature in 2001. This unique public-private partnership combines state government resources with private sector contributions and the television production services of Helena Civic Television. TVMT is Television by the People, for the People, and Made in Montana.

Overview

The purpose of TVMT is to provide Montana citizens with unfiltered access to public policy deliberations through gavel-to-gavel coverage of the legislative process and the proceedings of the executive and judicial branches of government. HCTV is under contract to cover Legislative Sessions and Interim committees, and to work toward statewide delivery of TVMT programming on cable television and by other means, such as the Internet.

Continuing Evolution

HCTV has covered each Legislative Session (and Special Session) since 2001.  In the 2013 Session, TVMT programming reached over 55 communities on cable and was also featured as a Montana PBS digital broadcast in Billings, Bozeman, Butte, Missoula, Helena, and Great Falls.    TVMT is now accessible to over 90 percent of the state’s population on television.  In addition, Legislative Services Division personnel video-stream a portion of our productions to the Internet so that citizens with high-speed connections can tune in to TVMT on their computers at home, at work, or in the field. A phased conversion to High Definition production is in progress and should be completed within the next biennium.

TVMT is designed to be a public affairs network.  In addition to state government proceedings, we also feature other programs of statewide interest, including presentations by scholars at the Montana Historical Society, our own documentary features, conversations with foreign visitors under the auspices of World Montana (formerly the Montana Center for International Visitors), and imported seasonal coverage of the Alberta Legislative Assembly.  There’s more to come on this non-partisan, non-commercial service for the citizens of Montana.

HCTV/TVMT Special Projects

We seek and sometimes obtain grants and contracts for special projects. For example, for the past 3 years the Greater Montana Foundation and other funders, including the BNSF Foundation, the League of Women Voters, the League of Cities and Towns, and the Fanwood Foundation have provided funding support for public affairs serial programs such as Global Positioning, a twice-monthly conversational interview program about Montanans’ connections with the world at large, and Global Civics Roundtables, a discussion program about the rights and resoponsibilities of citizenship in the 21st century. The most recent installment in this educational genre is a six part series of 90 minute televised public seminars on Global Civics.

HCTV has produced a documentary video for the Helena Symphony entitled The Making of Mahler 8, and a six-part series on small rural museums for the Montana Historical Society called The Montana Heritage Tour. We obtain short-term contracts from state agencies, such as the Governor’s Office, to cover events such as Tribal Relations Training for state employees.

You can help underwrite these projects by making a tax deductible contribution to Helena Civic Television or by clicking the DONATE button to use your credit card. THANK YOU for supporting HCTV and TVMT!
